One’s goal in every disagreement ought to be to lose. Losing is better than winning an argument. When you win you don’t grow. When you lose you grow and gain something. If you are right, stand in the truth for losing truth is a great loss, but don’t hold on to something because you are afraid of losing your worth. Lose your worth so you can grow into something more.

Our appetites are fickle things

Our appetites cannot contain beauty. Our appetites are fickle things that sway with the prevailing wave, never satisfied and as gaunt as the grave. They harbor selfishness and petty squabbling. They incite us to hate. In our pursuit of our loves, we become the very things we hate, and our left to languish in our fate. When we are the rulers of our world, we are lost, though we are certain of our cause. Pride cannot contain beauty, for the mind is closed and eye refuses light. We build our own worlds, elaborate schemes and arguments to protect us, keeping others’ ideas out, and hating truth, we become def. We are safe, though. Why hear words that shatter who you are? Why be destroyed by love? Yet beauty is not safe. Love is not safe. Not to a world of our own making. We have abandoned the true and beautiful world, to hold on to deciding for ourselves what is beautiful Desiring our autonomy, we frantically fight and scramble for mud pies, being enslaved by our passions, when a banquet is set before us, if only we would only look up from our mire. We our consumed by our appetites and cannot look up to see the hand reaching out to us to help us out of our darkness. We cannot hear the voice, the word that speaks gently and offers us life. It is only in a world that is holy other that we find beauty. Beauty is beheld by the broken who are crushed by truth and smell the foul stench of their own desires. They lift up their heads to the one who is ready to lift them out. They look into his eyes of love and call on his name. And they, though still smelly and dirty, are held in his embrace. Life has only now begun. And in their journey to love, as they dance to the music, and are satisfied by the banquet, their mud begins to fall away . . .

Don’t be independent

We are told to be independent and be our own person, but it is in submission that we truly become more than who we are.

Only someone unworthy can learn

I was talking with my daughter about something and I realized you cannot learn and be prideful at the same time. Pride creates a fool.

You cannot seek your worth and learn, it is in only in realizing that you are unworthy that you realize your need to learn and can finally be free to grow.

Fight to the death

I believe in taking ideas and putting them in a gladiator match and seeing who survives. I am not easy with or handle Christian beliefs gently. I ask hard questions. And if we are pursuing truth, we ought to be willing to ask the hard questions and be willing to be proven wrong. Every time the Bible has decimated any competition. My faith in the scripture is not a blind faith, but a faith with substance. I am not saying this proves I am right. It doesn’t. But I do not say lightly that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. And after seeing more battles in the gladiator field than I could ever count, I am confident that the foundation cannot be moved. And then we could talk about the love of God. And to know that, to be pursued by it, to be held by it. Sure, we all come to our ideas of what wisdom, enlightenment, understanding, and truth by faith, whoever we are. That is why there are so many ideas of what this is. I have chosen to believe and have faith, not in the concept or idea of Truth, but in the One who claims to be Truth. This is a very radical claim. And one that doesn’t make us comfortable, because if this claim is true, then we are no longer left to our own concepts of what truth, enlightenment, wisdom, understanding, and love are. We must submit to the one who defines all that is good, beautiful, and love. I don’t expect others to agree, but the weight of this implication is important.

Answering your own questions

One of the things that frustrates me, is watching a video, or seeing a post where someone is asked a question, but instead of answering it, they argue for their point of view, making all these points, and sounding great, and yet with all the show and emotion, tears and sweat, they never once address any of the objections of the person asking the question. They sound good to those who already agree with them, but leaves the person asking the question, feeling ignored. They spend time answering imaginary objections. And in the end, they are only having a conversation with themselves, which is a little weird. If you refuse to listen to your opponents, your position is not as strong as you thought it was. Pride puffs up and destroys. None of us knows or understands as much as we think we do. We all have this tendency toward this insanity of only talking to ourselves. And we all have done it. It is something we have to be aware of about ourselves and fight vigilantly. And this is an important fight, if for anything else, for our own sanity. We need to be addressing real people, not imaginary ones.

Wisdom is being knocked down

If you stand in the truth, nothing can knock you down. If you don’t stand in the truth, then it is blessing to be knocked down. If you are to be wise, most likely, you will be knocked down a lot.

Wisdom is legalism?

Sometimes we call wisdom “legalism” simply because we don’t feel good at it and have issues with our identity and don’t understand our identity in Christ. Wisdom is freedom.

Relying on our own words

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. When Adam fell, he chose to find his wisdom in something other than God. He chose to discern good and evil for himself, cutting off his dependency on every word that comes from the mouth of God. In Jesus, our Word, God has called us to lay down our lives as living sacrifices, that we might have our minds renewed in dependency on our God.

We must approach life in humbleness, realizing that the sin of man is being dependent on our own wisdom. We must not trust in our ability to discern good and evil or in our own wisdom, but live lives looking to and fearing the One who searches our hearts and souls and allowing the scriptures to come into us as a double-edged sword. He alone is our source of discernment, knowledge, and wisdom.
