The Gospel gives us freedom to hate our sin and creates in us a desire to expose and confess our sin, rather than hide it or pamper it or excuse it or lash out against those who confront us. Because the Gospel reconciles us to God, we no longer have to shrink back and hide or defend ourselves. Our life is now in Christ and not in our own works or failures. We no longer have to fix ourselves first and then come to God. The Gospel bids us to come as we are. It is as we walk into the light that his Word washes us clean. It is as we see the beauty of God that our idols become abhorrent and are cast off.

The natural consequence of coming near to God is that as we come into the light, we are seen. The Gospel is honest about who we are. It is not flattery or a false love. It is not fake. It sees us as we are, even at our worst. The Gospel lets us know we are seen and loved. And it is in His love that we find rest and healing. And even when we don’t get the Gospel, the Gospel still bids us to come near. Because it is only in coming near to God, the only source of life, beauty, goodness, and truth, that we are made whole. The Gospel is a powerful force that sets us free. Or better said, the Gospel brings us to a powerful God who sets us free.

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:9–16, ESV)

We find safety in our pride.

It is in our nature to hold on to our view, our own version of “truth” or to be conformed into the world’s viewpoint around us. In Genesis, the serpent tempted Adam and Eve to find their “truth” outside of God, to determine their own version of good and evil. We have become wise in our own eyes. Sin corrupts our hearts desires and drives us to pursue our own glory though a self-centered world view.

Whatever we pursue and look to outside of God shapes our version of “truth”. It shapes how we think, how we look at the world, and who we are. We identify who we are with these “truths” and they become integral to our “self”.

We build a world surrounded by our perceptions and experiences. We trust our interpretations and our ideas of how this world works. Our “truth”, this “worldly wisdom”, becomes our sanctuary for it explains the world around us. It makes sense of the disorder and protects us. It becomes ingrained into who we are. It is a part of us. To stray from it is to walk on insecure ground, to risk your own heart, to be shaken. To stray from it is to lose one’s very self.

So, instead of presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice, we fight to hold on to our own “integrity”, our own “truth”, our own world view. “Worldly wisdom” becomes our refuge. Our interpretation of the world helps us to make sense of the world. It keeps us stable. It’s safe. It makes sense. And it’s comfortable. It doesn’t shake up our world. It doesn’t call us to die to our self.

It is a scary thing to have our world turned upside down, to find out that our “truth”, our world view has been a lie. To find out that who we are is a lie. However, that is what the Gospel does. It takes us into a world that is unknown, a world that strips away our “worldly wisdom” that strips the very essence of who we think we are and calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus. Our view of the world has become not just a collage of ideas, but how we see ourselves in the deepest part of our being. So the Gospel call is a call that feels like we are losing the essence of who we are. This is often why we fight. We don’t want to lose our stability.

So, when God speaks His truth into our hearts, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”, we are shaken. We are rocked to the core. What we held on to for security becomes shaky ground. Our “self” is in danger. And we fight and stubbornly hold on to what we know.

How does this affect our relationships?

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. – James 4:1-4, ESV

We have chosen our own world view apart God and have become enemies of God, wallowing in our adultery and rebellion. And our muck is splashed around on ourselves and others. Now our passions, our desires, our world views rule our relationships causing us to covet, to fight and quarrel, and to murder. Even our best relationships are fractured by our pride, lust, and greed. We are damaged.

• Conversations and interactions with others are centered around my world and my interpretations of reality.
• We pursue protecting our world view above truth in our interactions with others.
• We pursue protecting our world above loving the other person.
• We don’t make Christ the center of our relationship because His light exposes our faulty world and makes us unstable.
• We refuse to be corrected and broken, for these things destroy our world view.

In our pride, we don’t realize how evil we truly are. Jesus called us to die to ourselves. If we are willing to choose our pride over our relationships and let our pride destroy our relationships, is it no surprise that we would choose the things of this world over God. It is this holding on to our world and our desiring it above God that brings hell. Thankfully, Jesus has come to destroy our world and in him we can die to ourselves.

Safety is found in brokenness.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. – Psalm 51:17

Thus says the Lord,

“Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.
Where then is a house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that I may rest?
“For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word. – Isaiah 66:1,2

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.   – Romans 12:1,2

To know Truth, we must die; we must be stripped of our glory.

In the scripture, when men came in the presence of the glory of God, they trembled. Their world fell apart in the light and majesty of God. In Christ, we boldly come to the throne room of God. And in the presence of God, we become broken. Our dependency on ourselves dies; our world views crumble and fall away, and the veil that keeps us from seeing Beauty is stripped away. And as our world crumbles away, we are held in the arms of our Father. God is our refuge, and we are loved. And in His arms, we truly become who we are.

In His loving presence, our daily walk is one of having our man-made “security” stripped away from us and nailed to the cross. We no longer need to look to our own “integrity”. We no longer need to uphold our glory. We instead behold the Lamb of God, who takes away our sin. It is in the cross that we find our true identity. In this act of presenting our bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, we rest in God as our refuge, and He boldly takes us into His arms and brings us close to Himself.

Therefore, let this false wisdom fall away, let my world be crushed and my heart broken as God calls me into His Holy presence and I am changed and conformed into the image of Christ and brought into a love that will consume me and make me truly me.

How does this affect our relationships?

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. –  Colossians 3:12-17, ESV

Adam and Eve’s relationship fractured when they pursued their own world view and no longer found their safety in God’s Word. They no longer encouraged each other to trust in God’s Word, but instead sought to defend their own definition of “good and evil”. They were at odds with themselves and God. Through the work and worth of Jesus, God is working in us to learn to intimately find our life in His Word, to rest in Christ’s glory and not our own. The Gospel strips us of our own glory, our own safety, our own righteousness, our own truth and gives us the royal robes of Jesus. It also equips us to speak the Gospel into one another’s life and makes us vulnerable to hearing the gospel spoken into our own lives. Through the brokenness of the gospel, we pursue intimacy with Christ together and in that pursuit our love for one another grows.

• When Christ rules, it is no longer about defending oneself or world view
• There is security in having an authority that is higher than our views on a subject, in conflict we can agree to pursue God’s truth and not our own.
• God’s will is “good and acceptable and perfect”. Our will is not so much. God loves us and his will is safe.
• When God’s will rather than our own desires rule, we can truly pursue each other in freedom.

If we stubbornly hold on and are unwilling to have our world views crushed and broken, and that on a continual and ongoing basis, we will miss out on the goodness and the joy of the Lord, that are found in the wonders of the Gospel.

Questions to Consider:

1. How do you respond to those who bring correction? Do you put up walls or get angry with others who confront you? Do you rejoice in and delight in correction? Do you thank and value those who are willing to bring correction into your life?
2. Do you require people to bring correction in a certain way or jump through hoops before you will listen, or do you value hearing correction regardless of how it is presented?
3. Do you attack those who confront you? Do you admit you were wrong?
4. Do you blame others for your sin? Are you unwilling to be honest about your pride?
5. Do you look for people to affirm you in the midst of your sin, or do seek people who will confront you with the horridness of your sin? Giving God’s command to cut off those things that hinder us from God, which is more beneficial regardless of motives?
6. Is the sin you hold on to so tightly and love, more important than the relationships around you? How long have you allowed it to destroy your relationships? If it is more important to you than those around you, how can you say that it is not more important than God as well?
7. Being broken means being near God, do you pursue safety rather than God’s presence?
8. In a discussion, is your goal to win an argument or to pursue truth? Do you care about winning an argument, if so, why? What does this say about your heart and your pride?
9. What are you willing to do to win an argument? How does this destroy relationships?
10. In a relationship, is it ok if you’re the one who is wrong and the one who needs correction every time or do you want there to be equal blame, equal correction? What does this say about what your worth means to you, your pride?
11. Do you actively pursue where you are wrong? Do you seek out others who will rebuke you or those who will make you feel confirmed?
12. When was the last time your world was shaken to its core? When was the last time you allowed the trembling in God’s presence to restore and heal your heart?
13. Will you take all this lightly, or will you allow these words to sink deeply into your heart and destroy your world? How tightly will you hold onto your sin?

“Know, therefore, that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people. Remember and do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD.

(Deuteronomy 9:6–7, ESV)

We understand that we cannot have friendship and relationship without vulnerability. But we are all stubborn and tend to put up walls to protect ourselves, not letting others come near. And with these walls we not only keep others away, but the LORD as well.

The LORD’s presence was amongst the Israelites as they encamped and wandered through the wilderness, and yet in their pride they did not understand their need for him, that he was more than the bread they ate or the water they drank, and so that generation could not enter his rest.

As with the Israelites pride keeps us from the LORD though he is not far off. The very thing we do to protect ourselves limits our ability to feel loved, because we are rejecting the very thing that would bring healing and restoration – the exposing our sin and the downfall of our pride. In our pride, we want to present ourselves to the world as something, concerned with the opinions of men. We become trapped in our own pride, trapped in the walls of our own making, instead of trusting and coming to the God who is near, because we are afraid of being exposed and naked. It was the pride of the religious leaders that kept them from seeing Jesus, though he was near and walking in their midst. Pride makes us blind guides, keeping us from seeing the truth. Instead of embracing love, we grumble, and hide from or attack those who would expose our nakedness.

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” (John 3:19–2, ESV)

We are “like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. [And so,] Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD” (Psalm 32:9,10 ESV, brackets added text). In our madness, to protect ourselves, we chose the darkness and the sorrows of the wicked, rather than the light of the LORD, that exposes and heals our sin.

When the Israelites are standing at the border and are on the precipice of entering the Promised Land, the LORD is clear it is not because of their righteousness that they are able to enter the land. They are still a rebellious people. “Do not say in your heart, after the LORD your God has thrust them out before you, It is because of my righteousness that the LORD has brought me in to possess this land, . . . Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going to be able to possess their land, but . . .that he may confirm the word that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob’” (Deuteronomy 9:4). There is no place for boasting are pride as we enter the Kingdom of God. No reason to hide that we are rebellious, sinful, and unworthy. God rescues us and drives out our pride because he swore an oath to Jesus. “Know, therefore, that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people.” When we seek our own worth, or seek to be seen well by others, we are in rebellion against the Gospel. We miss the point of the Gospel. We are foolish, stubborn, blind, rebellious, mad and we must die to ourselves, we must die to our own efforts. The LORD, alone has conquered the promised land. Instead of pride, we are called to allow others to speak the Gospel into our lives, to expose our sin, and to break down our walls of pride. “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (James 5:16a, ESV). It is as our sin is exposed that we find healing, not in building walls. And as we cease striving, the wonder that we are more than conquerors as we walk in the light shall be evident, not because of anything we have done, for we are a rebellious and foolish people, but because God through Jesus has sworn to give us the land. It is in vulnerability and nakedness that we can experience friendship, intimacy, and love and are clothed in Christ. God is near, not far away. Let us not shrink back in pride, but instead come to him and be held in his embrace.

and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. (James 2:23, ESV)

And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,

nor be weary when reproved by him.

For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,

and chastises every son whom he receives.”

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.

(Hebrews 12:5–13, ESV)

God uses his word to expose us, but then washes us with his word and brings healing. Though God’s exposing our sin brings healing, we are “like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you” (Psalm32:9). We want to conquer our sin in our own way. In a way that makes us feel safe. We want to hold on to our pride. We have forgotten the promise of the Gospel,

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,

whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,

and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away

through my groaning all day long.

For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;

my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah

I acknowledged my sin to you,

and I did not cover my iniquity;

I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”

and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

(Psalm 32:1–5, ESV)

Healing never comes from protecting our pride. But the love of God for us is immense even in this for it is in this state that God calls to us. “Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, ‘He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us’? But he gives us more grace. Therefore, it says, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and morn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to morning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you” (James4:5-10). When we see ourselves as we are, we ought to morn and weep, for our sin is great. But when we understand this, we also understand God’s grace for us, and we no longer have to perform before God or man. We can lay down our performance. Jesus calls to us, “Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

One of the reasons we hold on to our pride is because the Gospel does not call us to live alone but calls us to walk this out in community. James is clear that healing comes from hearing the word of God. God’s word comes alive as we experience the body of Christ. We are not meant to hear God’s word alone. The scripture says, “Better is open rebuke, then hidden love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (Proverbs 27:5,6a). James ends his letter with this, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” As Paul admonishes us to put sin to death, he also encourages us to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16). And in this truth, we are not only surrounded by the love of God but the love of the body of Christ.

There are songs that act like a bladed spotlight, penetrating, cutting away at the walls I make, cutting deep enough to expose my heart and reveal who I am. In these words, I hear the sentiments of myself and see myself for who I am with all its ugliness,

Behold the man upon a cross, 

My sin upon His shoulders; 

Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice 

Call out among the scoffers.

As I see my heart, I come to understand more deeply that without God’s grace, my rebellious heart would have no hope at all.

Many will say, “If God showed up, I would believe in him”. Or even we might say we admire Jesus, even though we do not believe he is a God or that the Christian religion is valid. And most of us at least consider Jesus to be an ok guy. Christians may be jerks, but Jesus was a good moral teacher who taught people to love one another. Love is good. Can’t hate a person like that, right? I suppose, but do we know the man? We can say we like Jesus because, for most of us, Jesus is an idea, a concept, more than a real person with whom we must interact. We can define and mold an idea to our imagination and fit it around our expectations. If we keep him contained, Jesus is not a person we have to get to know. Here is the deal: If you have this casual knowledge of Jesus and like him, it is probably because you do not know much about him. Yes, they greeted him with joy and a kingly welcome when he entered Jerusalem. But only a few days later, those who were alive and interacted with him when he was here ended up crying out, “crucifying him.” 

But we might say, “Yeh, they crucified him back then, but I wouldn’t do that.” Well, . . . is that really true? Do you know him? Have you experienced him, seen him, heard him speak, like those who crucified him? He deeply challenged the hearts of all who were near him. Why do you think your response would be different? We tend to see the best in ourselves. “If I was there, I would have behaved differently. . .I would have stood up to Nazism, racism, slavery, etc. blah, blah, blah . . .” We believe we are wiser, better prepared, stronger, unique, and not like all others who have come before us. But if we are honest with ourselves, we are no better than others, for our hearts are prone to the same longings for safety and comfort. We have a strong instinct for self-preservation. We are by no means unique or superior in this instinct but are flawed with the same weaknesses and faults as those who came before us. I know this because I have seen this so many times in my own heart and actions. And even though I wish I could simply shake them off, they cling to me. Or better said, they are a cancer inside of me that requires major intervention to be removed.

When I say this, you may think I am going to say that you would be offended by Jesus’ moral teaching. Though this is often true, it is not the core of the offense. This is crucial to understand: Jesus was not a moral teacher. He did not come to make us better people. He was not creating a to-do list or steps on how to be a good person. He was not giving strategies on how to love others. He did not come to build us up or to make us feel better about ourselves.

He came to destroy us. To call us to lose our life. He had come to destroy our world. For he was calling people out of the kingdom of this world, out of the darkness, out of oppression into his Kingdom. Jesus said, “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness” (John 12:46, ESV). 

We hear the word “darkness”, and we think of things that are clearly evil. Things like murder, rape, slavery, and abuse. But the fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was not something that was grotesque, but “was good for food,” and “a delight to the eyes” and “was to be desired to make one wise” (Genesis 3:6). The fruit “opened their eyes.” The truth is that we are not attracted to things we find grotesque. We are attracted to the things we love and hold dear. But in turning to these things, we have turned away from our creator to things that have been created. We have abandoned the source of light, and therefore, we are in darkness.

Most of us are attached to the world we live in, the things we have and the ideas we treasure, and the joys we experience, and so were most in the days Jesus walked the earth. Jesus said that we need to be willing to cut off our right arm or pluck out our right eye. The right arm was seen as a symbol of one’s power, the eye as something most precious to us. If someone came to chop off our right arm or pluck out our right eye, we would fight and fight to the death to defend ourselves. Imagine if someone was coming to destroy your world and all that you loved. How would you respond? Would you defend yourself? What if that enemy declared “no surrender and no quarter”? Yes, the people in Jesus’s day were no different than us. Jesus is by no means comfortable. Jesus has come and threatens all that we know and hold on to. He calls us to abandon this world and follow him. He has called us to die. This is not casual moral teaching; it is a line in the sand. Jesus said that the world “hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil” (John 7:7, ESV). We do not want to hear this message. Love does not abide evil. It destroys and conquers it completely, with no option for surrender or quarter. Love has come to conquer us. 

A popular verse is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” But right after this, Jesus makes it clear, “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed” (John 3:19,20, ESV).  

Jesus may intrigue us, but in the end, we love this world, and we want to hold on to it. We will take the Jesus of our imagination, but we will not take the Jesus who has come to conquer. Jesus has come to destroy this evil age, and if we cling to it, we will be destroyed along with it. And this being so, Jesus is a threat to the life we love. He is a threat to us. Jesus made it clear, “Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:25, ESV).

And so, Jesus came to rescue us from our fate, to save us from the darkness, to save us from ourselves, but we love the darkness more than the light. We love the life we have made more than God. We love the darkness and do not want to let it go, and so the light becomes our enemy and invasion force, rather than a rescue mission and our salvation. Though Jesus is indeed the enemy of evil and darkness, He is also the one who has come to rescue us from evil and darkness. And yet, because the darkness has become so dear to us, we flip things in our upside down world and call what is good, evil, and what is evil, good. We flee from the light into the comfort of darkness and so choose our fate. 

Jesus’s miracles and teachings fascinated and intrigued the masses, but in reality, he was not well loved by the people of his day. On occasion, people picked up stones to kill Jesus after hearing him speak. He was hounded by the Pharisees and Sadducees. Even the crowds who followed him and appeared to love him eventually abandoned him because they found his teachings too hard for them. Their love was the comfort of this world. Only a few stuck it out, and even those deserted him when he was arrested. And in the end, when he was brought before the people to see what they would have done, they cried out, “Crucify him!”   

When I take an honest look at my own heart, I am with those who tried to stone him, with those who abandoned and deserted him, and in that crowd who called for his death. I can say with the hymnist, “Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers.” 

Jesus said,  

Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ (John 15:23-25) 

So, some will say if God showed up, I would believe in him. He has shown up, and he has performed great miracles, validating his claims. Those who were there and saw these miracles and heard his teachings, instead of believing, killed him. Do not think you would have acted any differently than those who saw him in his day. You, too, would defend the things you love. We love this world and are ready to fight against anything that has come to destroy the things we cherish. And this is what the Kingdom of God does, it destroys this evil age and calls us to repent and to come to God and be reconciled with him through the work and worth of Jesus alone. In the end, Love will overcome, and this evil age will come to an end. Though we fight it, we cannot stop it. Love will conquer evil. However, this world is all we have known. What God has called us to is unknown and uncomfortable. We cringe and shrink back and are afraid to tread. We see our world being destroyed, and we desperately want to fight to keep it. We believe that when we fight against Jesus, we are protecting what is good, fighting against an enemy who is coming after what we believe is good, beautiful, wise, and true. And we are willing to do anything to keep the “good” we have. So, in this frantic desire to protect what I have, regardless of how much God pursues me in his love, I hear my angry voice defending what I love and crying out, “How dare you show up in my world”, “Crucify him!”, “Away with the man who has come to threaten my world.” 

There is a song I relate to, that exposes me for who I am. It has these lines in it . . .

Behold the man upon a cross,

My sin upon His shoulders;

Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice

Call out among the scoffers.

Most of us at least consider Jesus to be an ok guy. Christians may be jerks, but Jesus was a good moral teacher that taught people to love one another. Love is good. Can’t hate a person like that, right? I suppose, but do we know the man. We can say we like Jesus because for most of us Jesus is an idea, a concept more than a real person, with whom we must interact. We can define and mold an idea to our imagination. Jesus is not a person we have to get to know. So, if you have this casual knowledge of Jesus and like him, it is probably because you don’t know much about him. Those who were alive and interacted with him when he was here ended up crucifying him.

We might say, “Yeh, they crucified him back then, but I wouldn’t do that”. Well, . . . is that really true. We tend to see the best in ourselves. “If I was there, I would have behaved differently. . .I would have stood up to Nazism, racism, slavery, etc. blah, blah, blah . . .” But if we are honest with ourselves, we are no better than others, our hearts are prone to the same longings for safety and comfort. We are not unique but all of us have weaknesses and faults.

Here is the thing, Jesus was not a moral teacher. He was not creating a to-do list of how to be a good person. He wasn’t giving strategies of how to love others. He was calling people out of the kingdom of this world, out of the darkness, out of oppression into his Kingdom. Jesus said, “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” (John 12:46).

Most of us are attached to the world we live in, so were most in the days Jesus walked the earth. Imagine if someone was coming to destroy your world. How would you respond? They were no different than us. Jesus is by no means comfortable. Jesus has come and threatens all that we know and hold on to. He calls us to abandon this world and follow him. This is not casual moral teaching; it is a line in the sand. Jesus said that the world “hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.” (John 7:7)

A popular verse is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” But right after this, Jesus makes it clear, “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.” (John 3:19,20) We may be intrigued by Jesus, but in the end, we love this world, we want to hold on to it. Jesus has come to destroy this evil age and if we cling to it, we will be destroyed along with it. Jesus is a threat to the life we love. He is a threat to us. He says things like, “Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” He came to rescue us from our fate, to save us from the darkness, but we love the darkness more than the light, and the light becomes our enemy.

Jesus’s miracles and teachings fascinated and intrigued the masses, but in reality, he was not well-loved by the people of his day. On occasion, people picked up stones to kill Jesus after hearing him speak. He was hounded by the Pharisees and Sadducees. Even the crowds who followed him and appeared to love him, eventually abandoned him, because they found his teachings too hard for them. Only a few stuck it out, and even those deserted him. And in the end, when he was brought before the people to see what they would have done, they cried out, “Crucify him!”  

When I take an honest look at my own heart, I am with those who tried to stone him, with those who abandoned and deserted him, and in that crowd who called for his death. I can say with the hymnist, “Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers.”

Thankfully, the song and the scriptures do not end there. . .

Behold the man upon a cross,

It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished;

His dying breath has brought me life –

I know that it is finished.

Yes, I was an enemy of Jesus. Yes, I put him to death. But my hatred for him is what held him there. Before Jesus was betrayed, he prayed that if there was another way to rescue humanity that God would provide it, that he would not have to suffer on the cross. God the Father who loved his Son would have granted his Son’s request if there was another way. Jesus chose to bear my hatred for him on the cross because it was the only way that we might be reconciled to God. On the cross, Jesus defeated hate with Love, darkness with Light.

Don’t deceive yourself by “liking” Jesus or being fascinated or intrigued by an idea of Jesus. This is not knowing the man. Jesus will not be ignored or fooled. He knows our hearts and who we are. Jesus warns, “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” (Matthew 7:22–23).

Despite this warning, we continue to love this world more than God and so we scoff. “The Pharisees, who were lovers of money [ie. this world], heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. And he said to them, ‘You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God’.” (Luke 16:14,15). We are not given the option of a casual relationship with Jesus. Jesus has come for a bride, the most intimate of relationships, the most powerful Love. We will either be lovers of this world or intimate lovers of Jesus. If we are lovers of this world, we will cling on to it and follow it into its fate, . . . Fortunately for me, Jesus did not die for the righteous, he died for sinners. He died for those who scoff and hate him. Before your world crumbles around you and it is too late, come to him, his arms are open wide. He is calling, “Come out of this evil age of darkness into the light.” Love is more than you have known.

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”

“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.”

“Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Jesus has come to destroy your world. How will you respond?

Jesus exposed our true hearts and the subtleness of evil. He said if we have called someone a fool, we are guilty of murder. When we look on someone lustfully, we are guilty of betrayal and adultery. We may think we are good when compared to others, but when we are unmasked by Love, we are not as good as we think we are. We cannot love well on our own. We are called to Love. Love is a person. When we choose to do what is right in our own eyes, we have rejected Love, for our own wisdom. We have become selfish. No matter how good we feel about ourselves, when we do what is right in our own eyes, we have abandoned our true Love, for ourselves. Yet even at our worst, True Love pursues us and calls us to come to himself.

But evil is subtle and attractive, luring us through pride. We are so determined to do what is right in our own eyes . . . . even if it means rejecting Love.

The comfort is that sin is devastating, and we are helpless and worthless. There is nothing we can do. . . . And we don’t have to. . .. Jesus has done it all. Through the work and worth of Jesus, we gain more for more than self-worth when we come to Him. We gain the love of God.

So let us not be shocked or devastated by the depths of our messed-upness, nor make light of sin, for we have a glorious Gospel that is bigger than the deepest depths of sin. Let that depth be apart of our speech.

In Isaiah 58, God says,

And let him return to the Lord,
And He will have compassion on him,
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.

God calls us to come as we are, filthy sinners, and to enjoy the richest of fare. We don’t pay for it with our own pecuniary resources of holiness. We cannot make things right or bring justice. We cannot pay for our wrongs. But through Jesus Christ, God calls . . .

Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters;
And you who have no money come, buy and eat.
Come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without cost.
“Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And delight yourself in abundance.

Cease striving, know that Jesus Christ is God, and behold the works of the Lord. Justice was met through the cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus took on the punishment we deserved. He filled both our need for justice as well as God’s justice. He has reconciled us to God. He makes wars to cease. And He calls out to us, “Come all who are weary and burdened, come find the justice you are looking for, come find rest from you labor.” He will be exalted and bring a people to Himself among the nations

Psalm 31, is a song describing God’s reaction to the sinner. He states that in the midst of our sin, we should, “Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.” Often in our sin, we don’t want to come to Him, we are like a stubborn mule. But in His tender love, He cries out, while it is called Today, “Come.”

“I don’t know if I’m weaker than other people, but it is a positive revelation to me how while the speech lasts it is impossible not to waiver just a little… Statements which I know to be untrue all but convince me, at any rate for the moment, if only the man says them unflinchingly.”

We are easily deceived. Do not think that you are above the many Germans enraptured by the speeches of Hitler? They were people just like us. We are people just like them.

And it happens, today, perhaps in more subtle mediums, but the lure of deception and evil is real. Like the foolish woman of Proverbs, it entices, and it attracts with a false beauty. But in the end, there is death and stench. It is alive and well in our own culture, promoting murder, hate, and a many other evils, bring destruction to lives and families.

But the voice of evil is familiar, we barely notice . . .

You see, it is not about me or my motives, I am saved by grace. And it is grace because my motives will never be right. If you are obsessed by being perfect, you’re trying to save yourself, it is a self-righteousness, and no gospel. The Gospel has faith in the work of Christ, not one’s own works. We make much of Christ, not ourselves. It is about the Gospel and glorifying Christ.

I fight vigilantly against false motives, and I do plead fervently with God for pure motives, they are sweet, but my hope is not in them.

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life” – 1 Timothy 6:17-19

Where is our hope, our delight, and our desires? The western world and other parts of the world in this generation has seen an abundance of prosperity. In many places such as the United States and Europe the general population lives in greater richest not only when compared to the rest of the world, but also when compared with the generations of man. Many live with great wealth – homes with several different rooms, indoor plumbing, a vast host of a variety of delicacies to feast upon, transportation that conveys us quickly to distant places and does so in comfort, the ability to learn a variety of skills and explore different occupations, scores of clothes to choose from, and more. In other places, today, and in other generations, these riches are not known. And for many of us, including me, these riches have become so common, that we have forgotten how much we have been given and these riches have become what is expected and demanded and even have become considered a necessity, instead of a blessing.

As God has been blessing me with these abundances, I see my own sin and how easily riches can corrupt the heart, and how easily the desire for comfort and the desire for security can affect my decisions, whether I am poor or rich. And these desires in my heart are sin creeping up to rot the blessings the Lord has given me. John wrote, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eye and pride in possessions – is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

As I eat the food with my nice clothes at a comfortable table in a modern home that the Lord has provided, can I consider it my right to have these things, when others can only afford basic nutrition; some eat the same thing for every meal, every day; and some die of starvation? Can I consider it a right to have a fancy home with many rooms and indoor plumbing, when families of different generations have to live in one room in other parts of the world? Is it a necessity to have a closet full of clothes, when others have so little?

For those who see these things as a necessity, the scripture gives this warning . . .”Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”

    The things we have are not a necessity or a right or a privilege, but a blessing. And we should always be thankful for what the Lord has granted us, giving Him glory. Paul states,

“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”

Earlier Paul writes,

“But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.”

What we are and what we do are founded in Christ. In Him and through Him, we have are being, we have our life. In Him alone are we rich. Christ gives us the strength to live whether in plenty or in want. And in Him we can do all things, that is of faith. What we have is not important. Whose we are is.

What we have is not ours, these possessions are the Lord’s, we are only stewards of them. And we will one day have to give an account for are stewardship. If we lived our lives trusting in these possessions, hording them for ourselves, and finding our delight in them, not only will we find ourselves hoarding what is rightfully the Lord’s and not ours, and essentially robbing the King, we will also find that our hope has rotted away with these hoarded possessions. “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eye and pride in possessions – is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Our attitude should not be how do I get a nice home, or how do I make sure I am eating well, or how do I have nice clothing. Our thoughts should be on how we can be faithful stewards of what is the Lord’s. How do I let Christ’s strength work in me, so “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Our treasure is Christ and our passions, and our love and our devotion are for Him. So let us throw aside all that hinders and entangles us and run with our eyes upon Christ, desiring and longing for Him, being enamored, and captivated by his beauty, and having pride in His possessing us, for in this the love of the Father is truly in us, and this does not fade away.

Christ stated,

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21

Our treasure is Christ and we should pursue that treasure with all our heart, mind, soul, and body. Jesus calls to us, “In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.” And He is honest about the cost of following Him . . . “Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.’” Our very lives are His, how much more are our possessions. And He is are King and Shepherd, we follow Him wherever He may lead us. And wherever He leads us, whether in plenty or want, He will give us the strength in all things, and He will enable us to be rich in good deeds. So with joy we cast off all that hinders us and we run with all our might and take pleasure in our freedom.
